Inspirational Artists

Nothing is born in a bubble. All of art is inspired by a collection of knowledge in ones mind. There are many artist that have inspired me and find there way into my work in some small or not so small way. Here are some of the more influential ones:

Arthur Rackham

Probably my favorite book artist as a child was Arthur Rackham. He was thought of as one of the most important artists during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is famous for his pen and ink techniques along with his watercoloring palette and process. His amazing compositions help to create wonderful narratives.

Kay Nielson

Another turn of the century classic European illustrator was Kay Nielson from Denmark.
Nielson's theatrical staging with a flat aesthetic along with his stylized figures with ornate pattern work and shape orientated compositions makes his book illustrations some of my favorites and have influenced my work in many ways.

Edward Gorey

Edward Gorey captured my attention at a young age with his humorously slightly macabre cartoony work. His one dimensional and highly graphic aspects to his art along with his hatching methods influences my new body of work in many ways.

Lotte Reiniger

German animator Lotte Reiniger captivate audiences in 18th century Europe with delicate hand-cut silhouettes. Countless illustrators since then have emulated her style.

Lisbeth Zwerger

Lisbeth Zwerger's simple whimsical yet melancholy character's with heavy shape language set against simple backgrounds makes her work some of the best contemporary book illustrations I've seen.

Ian Miller

Like Sergio Toppi, Ian Miller's two surreal 2-dimensional black and white detailed pen work has a big influence on my work.
